Questions to Ask Your Child’s New Tutor, Advice from Drew Foster

Drew Foster is a Dean’s Listed college student who attends Providence College and lives in the state of New York. When he is not studying for his classes or being involved with a number of different student organizations, Drew Foster gives back to his campus by serving as a tutor in the finance department.
As an experienced tutor, Drew Foster is incredibly familiar with the types of questions you should ask a potential tutor, should you be hiring one for your child. Read on to find out what those questions are:

1.      “How will you work with my child’s teacher?” For certain subjects, Drew Foster notes that it is not necessary to have regular contact with the child’s teacher. However, if you are hiring a tutor for a subject that is taught in school, you are going to want to ask the tutor how they work with the child’s teachers’ teaching style.

2.      “How will you keep me, as a parent, informed about my child’s progress?” Drew Foster says that, all too often, parents expect their children to report back to them about how tutoring is going. However, Drew Foster believes that that may not be the best strategy. Instead, Drew Foster encourages all parents to make a plan for communicating with their tutor early on in the relationship so that everyone can stay on the same page.

Drew Foster knows that it can be unnerving to hire a tutor for your child, especially when you must come to terms with the fact that your child needs a tutor in the first place. Still, Drew Foster believes that if you take the time to set up the right chain of communication, you and your child’s tutor will have a healthy and productive relationship.
